Safety & Security

It can be nerve-wrecking to think about traveling abroad, whether you are with a group or on your own. Piedmont stands by you and works to reduce your risk before you even leave campus. A few of the steps we take to keep you safe include:

Prior to leaving:

  • We will prepare you for difficulties you may face in a Travel Study Orientation:
      • How do you get a train ticket if you don't speak the language?
      • Where do you go if you have an emergency?
      • How can you communicate with family/friends and Piedmont staff while you are traveling?
      • When you are in the host country, where can you go for more information about restaurants, entertainment and general questions?
      • How can you stay safe as you travel?
      • Where should you keep your passport?
      • ...and so many more questions you may have!
  • We will register you with the US Department of State Smart Traveler Program (you can choose to opt out for any reason). This program will allow you to receive alerts from the host country embassy in real time while you are traveling. If there are potential dangers that arise while you are in-country, you will be notified immediately by local American officials.
  • We will keep an eye on current events in the host country through local media and the US State Department to be aware of any potential difficulties you may face.

While you are traveling, you will have a host country contact and a Piedmont staff member's cell phone number for any questions you may have. Piedmont wants you to have fun while you are studying abroad and recognize that you can only do that if you feel safe.

Student Feedback

Quotation Mark

I really wanted to travel abroad with Piedmont because it was budget friendly, as well as it allowed me to have fun while completing my degree.

Quotation Mark

Before the trip, I was pretty nervous because I only knew one person in the group and I didn't really know what to expect. After arriving, though, I felt blessed to have such a great group who was eager to learn and experience the cities and museums.

Quotation Mark

I thought I had a good understanding of international relations, but there is so much information that only hands-on experiences can bring.
